Parting

I’ll never see her again, I think,
and then I think for every person
in my life a time comes when

I’ll never see them again. Dearest
friends will go out the door for
the last time but I won’t know it

then. Even those acquaintances
I chat with at the diner each morning
over breakfast take on new meaning.

A last time for everyone. Family.
Friends. The teller at the bank. Everyone.
I’ll never see them again, I think.

That last meeting usually unrecognized,
seemingly insignificant, I think. Each
parting will be sad from now on.
