Prose Contest Winner!

Results are in, and we are delighted to announce judge Sharon Short’s pick of “Ashes to Ashes,” by Matthew Coz, as the winner of this year’s Slippery Elm Prize in Prose!

Sharon says, “This story uses the metaphor of a covered pool, and both the ecosystem that grows on top and what lurks underneath, to evoke how traumatic events, if left unexplored or openly discussed, can stew within us and within our families, and at the same time, cover us in a skim coat that both fascinates and repels….  The ending is poignant and striking.  Coz is masterful, and I’d love to read more of his work.”

Thanks to everyone who entered, and we can’t wait to bring you this winning story in our upcoming issue!
