Congratulations to Broderick Eaton, for her story “The Baby on the Train,” chosen by this year’s judge Lawrence Coates!
Lawrence says: “The Baby on the Train” is a well-researched story set in the fraught times before the outbreak of World War Two. The author creates a suspenseful and compelling narrative of a Jewish woman attempting to leave Germany as the dangers to Jews mount. Sura, the main character, boards a train with her infant child to cross the border out of Germany, thinking that her husband will join her. The end of the story is moving, with Sura safe in another country but still uncertain of her husband’s fate.
We look forward to featuring the winning story in our 2026 issue.
