Flight

It was the trees he noticed
way up high, how different

they looked from this angle. First time
flying? I asked, though I knew him

for a newbie right off. And then,
of course, the mountains, topped off

with snow, and could he just grab
a handful? I told him no, we’re on a schedule,

and besides, the birds don’t do that.
Amateur stuff. Agreed, he said,

then lit up at the sight of the ocean below,
and did we have time to dive in? Here’s

where I mention he’s been looking down
the entire time, and is this what I can expect?

Here’s where I also ask him
if he even gets the point of flight.
