Janiform

Janiform
Kevin Brown

adj. — two-faced, resembling Janus

A lawyer plays bass for a blues
band, writing songs about the sorrows
of suits, while a poet behaves
like a broker, trading
T-bills and bonds, muttering
that they are metaphors
for

money after she’s
had three drinks. A banker believes
she is a basketball
player whose only liability
is that she cannot go
to her left, while her major asset is a crisp
crossover that has not

depreciated with age. An adman peddles
parabolas and Pythagoras
to students at the local
community college, though,
most nights, they are in
no mood to buy.

And they will live all their lives
looking for someone to
see them clearly.
